Good news it looks like the SEO changes that Rich has undertaken on TwistLocal.co.uk are staring to take affect. Visitor numbers are starting to increase day by day.

For those of you who don't know Twistlocal is a project that me and Rich built several years ago to see if we could develop a (at that time) very seo friendly business directory for Wales with all our own code , no templates or frameworks or such like. Well 10 months later Twistlocal 1 was completed and i have to say it most definitely is the hardest system we have had to build for both complexity and size.

On the upside, most of the techniques we have mastered for certain ' how to dos ' where learnt whilst building TwistLocal and allowed us at an early stage of our business to understand that a small focused team can deliver on big projects.

Twist Local is now at version 2.x and in fairness still looks decent, and still attracting new business listings.

The future of Twist local? We are always (me and Rich) tossing ideas around regarding additions but it would be all to easy to add a twitter or a technology clone of some other site  to Twistlocal so in the short term the plan is simple to keep getting businesses on the system to truly make Twistlocal one of the premier free directories in Wales and introduce a low cost advertising option to provide more business exposure.

If anyone has any (sensible ideas) reply you never know

Good news for Welsh businesses. This was officially launched this week and about time too...

 1. The grant is aimed at new or existing businesses that are located in, or planning to locate in, the areas of Neath Port Talbot, Swansea, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire or Ceredigion.

2. The support is aimed at Small and medium sized enterprises (employing less than 250 people) with either a turnover not exceeding €50 million or a balance sheet not exceeding €43 million.

3. Businesses will need to comply with the European Commission eligible sectors for Convergence funding.  Support is aimed primarily at businesses in or servicing the manufacturing sector, though applications will be considered on a case by case basis.  The following sectors are ineligible for support: - agriculture, forestry and fishing, insurance companies, social welfare facilities.  Funding maybe available for retail development and direct consumer services in discretionary cases where the applicant can demonstrate a niche market and no issue of displacement.

4. The grant is based on up to 40% of approved project costs up to a maximum of £5,000 grant.  The minimum grant will be £1,000.

There are several other points in the document but our first impressions especially for web based work that this is a huge step forward

Part of your on-line marketing efforts should be to make sure that you add your site to directories/websites to increase your visibility and to benefit Search Engines. When the Search Engines are indexing your website they will also be looking to see in how many other places your domain name appears. Using their internal algorithms they can the calculate the weight of your site and therefore the importance of your site and ultimately your ranking position.

Shameless plug : Twist Systems run our own directory which is super SEO friendly and its free. Sorry but at the moment it only covers Wales.

(note there are many other factors which also affect positioning this is just one area. )
